  • Are already in a firefighter recruitment process
  • Need to improve your strength and conditioning
  • Want to train for firefighter-specific physical demands

Firefighter Fitness Is Different

Firefighters may need to:

  • Move heavy equipment
  • Climb stairs
  • Carry and drag loads
  • Work repeatedly at high intensity
  • Push, pull and lift
  • Move efficiently while fatigued
  • Maintain cardiovascular endurance
  • Perform physically demanding tasks while wearing PPE and equipment

You don’t just need to be fit. You need to be able to WORK.

What You'll Do in Fit for Fire

Get hands-on experience with some of the physical tasks required for Edmonton Firefighter testing.

equipment carry

Participants must carry two extrication tools (44 lbs and 80 lbs) over a set distance, perform controlled holds at three targets, and return the tools to the start, all within 3 minutes and 45 seconds.

Charged Hose Advance

Participants must advance a 44mm charged hose nozzle 30m as quickly as possible without running, starting from a standing position, and complete the test within 27 seconds.

Weighted Sled Pull

Participants must pull a sled 15m using a 16mm static rope from a stationary position, repeat this three times with a 15m walk between reps, and complete the test within 110 seconds.

Forcible Entry

Participants must use a 10lb hammer to strike a target until a buzzer signals the end, completing the test within 19 seconds.

Victim Rescue

Participants must drag a rescue dummy 30m through a serpentine course using a rescue harness, finishing when the dummy’s feet cross the starting pylon.

ladder climb

Participants must climb a ladder 10 rungs up and down five times, maintaining three points of contact, without missing rungs, and complete the test within 97 seconds.
