As a former correctional officer in Alberta for almost 2 decades and the founder of Blue Line Fitness Testing which provides law enforcement fitness testing and wellness workshops, I started this podcast as a way for female first responders to be able to share their stories including the trials, tribulations and triumphs of their daily work. You can find the podcast here.

FAQs about Test Types
You must be between 15 and 69. If you are under 19 yrs old, your parent or legal guardian must accompany you to the test to sign the required forms.
CBSA has recently changed its administrative requirements and NO LONGER requires a Medical Clearance form unless the PARE Administrator believes the participant should be assessed by a physician prior to testing. As long as it was YOU who completed the booking and answered the questions on the Get Active Questionnaire in the booking process, you do not need a Medical Clearance form. Medical Clearance forms are not required for any of our tests unless we feel you need one (determined at the venue).
The APREP is the required fitness test for the Edmonton and Calgary Police Services. It includes an obstacle course with a weighted dummy pull, the push pull machine and a simulation cuffing machine as well as a separate shuttle run component. You must complete the obstacle course in 2:10 or less and must achieve a level 7 on the shuttle run. Learn more about the City Police Fitness Prep here or book your test online.
The COPAT, or Correctional Officers Physical Abilities Test is for those aspiring to be Correctional Officers. Some agencies such as AHS will also accept the COPAT. Learn more about the COPAT here or book your official COPAT test.
The PARE or Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation test is utilized for most peace officer agencies, the Alberta Sheriffs, CBSA and Transit Peace Officers. The pass time for the PARE is 4:45 and it is valid for 6 months once completed except for the Sheriffs who require it within 3 months. There are 3 sections of the PARE including the 6 lap obstacle course, the push pull machine and the 80lbs weighted bag carry. Learn more about the PARE or book the official PARE test online.
The POPAT or Police Officers Physical Abilities Test is the most difficult of all law enforcement fitness tests and combines the 6 lap obstacle course from the PARE, increasing the jump to 6ft for some agencies and the Push Pull (80lbs) and the Vault portions of the COPAT, as well as the 100lb weighted bag carry. It must be completed in 4:15 for some agencies and 4:45 for other agencies. Some of the other law enforcement agencies using the POPAT are the Delta Police Department, BC, the Saskatoon Police Department, the Prince Albert Police Department, the Regina Police Department and the New Westminster Police Department. You can learn more about the POPAT here or you can book your official POPAT test online.
The SOPAT or Sheriff Officers Physical Abilities Test is required for BC and Saskatchewan Sheriffs. To prepare for the SOPAT in Alberta, BC, or Saskatchewan, your training should include a combination of cardiovascular and strength training. To pass the SOPAT you must complete the agility run/obstacle course, push/pull machine and vaults in 4 minutes and 45 seconds for Saskatchewan and 4 minutes 15 seconds for BC. Learn more about the SOPAT here or book your official test online.
Booking & Scheduling
A high degree of fitness is recommended (training a min of 5-6 days a week at a very high intensity). We do not require a medical clearance as you will complete a medical questionnaire when you register for your test. We will take your blood pressure before you run the test to ensure you are within a safe range to run your fitness test. If your blood pressure is too high, we will take it a few times to determine if we can get it to lower. If it does not move into a safe range, you will not be permitted to run that day.
Yes. For groups of 10 or larger, please contact us through the website’s Contact Form.
View our Testing page to see all our available testing dates and times. Select the testing type you wish to run and ensure it is the correct test. Complete the booking process confirming you have selected the correct date and time. We are located in Edmonton so ensure you can make the trip if you are out of town. Once you have confirmed these things, submit payment via credit card. You will receive a confirmation email once you have successfully booked. Your account will automatically be created & you will be emailed with your login information. To access your booking orders, go to your Account and to Orders.
NOTE: There are absolutely NO refunds, reschedules, or changes to your bookings once they are made. If you cannot make your testing date, you will be required to rebook and pay again. You can read our full refund policy here.
After a successful booking you will receive a confirmation email and account creation email (It is VERY important to ensure you enter your contact information correctly!) Please check your “junk mail” folder if you don’t see them.
Contact us through the website’s Contact Form and we will see what we can do to accommodate you.
You should be training at least 5-6 days a week at a very high intensity, combining both cardiovascular endurance and strength training well in advance of your test (min 6 weeks prior) to ensure you are fit enough to pass your test. Most people do fail these tests the first time they run and several people vastly underestimate the advanced level of fitness you need to pass. To improve your fitness, you can utilize one of our Workshops.
There are NO refunds, reschedules, or changes to your bookings once they are made. If you cannot make your testing date, you will be required to rebook and pay again. For our classes and workshops, we request that you cancel at least 5 days before your scheduled class or workshop. This will allow us to offer your spot to another person. You may call us at 780-232-9541 or email us at [email protected] to cancel. Read the full cancellation policy withing our Terms and Conditions here.
About testing
Yes. You can take the test as many times as you like. But each test you take requires a separate booking on a separate day. For safety reasons (because the tests are quite strenuous), you can only run the test once per session.
Testing time for the entire session depends on how many people that are being tested at your session. Expect to be at the venue for approximately 2 – 3 hours depending on group size.
We test up to a maximum of 15 people per session, and require a minimum of 6 people to hold a session. If we do not have a minimum of 6 people, we will reschedule you at no cost to another session of your choosing.
PARE: 4:45 | COPAT in Alberta: 3:20
- You will check in and ensure all required paperwork is completed. I will thoroughly explain the test you are about to take and demonstrate the various components of it, walking you through it as we do.
- You will have time to warm-up.
- You will have an opportunity to practice the various components of the test until you’re comfortable performing them (usually about 15 – 30 minutes). I will spend time coaching you here as well.
- You can now take the test!
- You will be given your time at the end of the test. You will also receive a detailed evaluation of your performance which breaks down each component and will identify any areas of weakness. I can then offer training suggestions on how to improve or refer you to a personal trainer affiliated with Blue Line Fitness who can personalize a training plan to improve your fitness up to testing standards.
WATER! A small snack, excellent runners with good tread (no vans, Skechers, work boots, or high tops) good fitting clothing you can move freely in and won’t impede your performance. Read the full ‘Tips for Testing Day’ article for more.
We provide a supportive, encouraging and helpful testing environment for everyone who attends. Testing dates are co-ed however, specific dates for females only are listed on our calendar as well if you wish to complete the testing with only female participants. Participants are expected to provide support and encouragement for all and nobody will yell or scream at you (unless, of course, you want us to!).
Yes. We need to ensure your blood pressure is within a normal range before you run to ensure your safety. No pre-workout or energy drinks should be consumed on the day of your test or you may not be eligible to run.
