FAQs about Test Types
You must be between 15 and 69. If you are under 19 yrs old, your parent or legal guardian must accompany you to the test to sign the required forms.
CBSA has recently changed its administrative requirements and NO LONGER requires a Medical Clearance form unless the PARE Administrator believes the participant should be assessed by a physician prior to testing. As long as it was YOU who completed the booking and answered the questions on the Get Active Questionnaire in the booking process, you do not need a Medical Clearance form. Medical Clearance forms are not required for any of our tests unless we feel you need one (determined at the venue).
The A‑PREP (Alberta Police Recruitment Evaluation Program) is the fitness test for Edmonton and Calgary Police Services. It includes an obstacle course with a weighted dummy pull, push-pull machine, and a simulation cuffing machine, plus a separate shuttle run. Candidates must finish the obstacle course in 2:10 or less and achieve level 7 on the shuttle run. Learn more about the City Police Fitness Prep here or book your test online.
The COPAT (Correctional Officers Physical Abilities Test) is designed for individuals aspiring to become Correctional Officers. Certain agencies, including AHS, also recognize the COPAT as part of their physical assessment requirements. Learn more about the COPAT here or book your official COPAT test.
The PARE (Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation) is used by most peace officer agencies in Alberta, including Alberta Sheriffs, CBSA, and Transit Peace Officers. Candidates must complete the test within 4:45, with results valid for six months (three months for Alberta Sheriffs). The PARE includes three sections: a six-lap obstacle course, a push-pull machine, and an 80 lb. weighted bag carry, assessing the strength, endurance, and agility needed for law enforcement roles. Learn more about the PARE or book the official PARE test online.
The POPAT (Police Officers Physical Abilities Test) is the most challenging law enforcement fitness test, combining obstacle course, push-pull, vault, and a 100 lb. bag carry. Completion times vary by agency (4:15–4:45). It’s used by agencies including Delta, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Regina, and New Westminster Police. You can learn more about the POPAT here or you can book your official POPAT test online.
The SOPAT (Sheriff Officers Physical Abilities Test) is required for Sheriffs in BC and Saskatchewan. It includes an agility/obstacle course, push-pull machine, and vaults. Completion times are 4:15 for BC and 4:45 for Saskatchewan. Training should focus on both cardiovascular endurance and strength to succeed. Learn more about the SOPAT here or book your official test online.
Booking & Scheduling
Medical clearance is not required to book a test. When you register, you’ll complete a medical questionnaire, and we will check your blood pressure before you begin to ensure it’s safe to participate. If your readings are elevated, we may retake them to see if they normalize. If your blood pressure remains outside a safe range, you will not be permitted to run the test that day for your safety.

To prepare for law enforcement fitness testing, train consistently 3-4 days per week at a high intensity, combining both cardiovascular endurance and strength training. Start well in advance—at least six weeks before your test—to ensure you’re physically ready. Many candidates underestimate the level of fitness required and may not pass on their first attempt. For additional support, consider attending our specialized workshops, such as A‑PREP practice sessions or Open Gym, and check out our detailed tips for testing day here.
There are NO refunds, reschedules, or changes to your bookings once they are made. If you cannot make your testing date, you will be required to rebook and pay again. About testing
Yes, you can take the test as many times as you’d like; however, each attempt must be booked separately on its own day. For safety reasons—due to the strenuous nature of the tests—you may only complete one test per session.
Testing time for the entire session depends on how many people that are being tested at your session. Expect to be at the venue for approximately 2 – 3 hours depending on group size.
We test up to a maximum of 15 people per session, and require a minimum of 6 people to hold a session. If we do not have a minimum of 6 people, we will reschedule you at no cost to another session of your choosing.
The PARE must be completed in 4 minutes and 45 seconds to pass. Some agencies may have shorter validity periods or additional requirements, but the official pass time remains 4:45.
The COPAT has a standard passing time of 2 minutes and 50 seconds, which is required by agencies that use this test for Corrections and related roles.
